Wired has a piece on the changing Body Mass Index of the average American woman vs. that of the average Playboy centerfolds, starting with Marilyn Monroe in December of 1953.  (The nerd in me thinks it’s completely awesome that they offer the actual data for download.) Unsurprisingly, the trend for the average woman has been a steady increase, from 22.2 in 1960 to 26.8 in 2000. Meanwhile, the trend for centerfold models has moved in the opposite direction, from 19.4 in 1960 to 18.2 in 2000. As the writer points out, the “playmates are becoming less like women and more like anime cartoon girls.”
