nudity at the airport

7 04 2009

A couple of years back, I remember hearing about a new type of scanner that was being planned for use in some airports, and which would use “backscatter x-rays” to penetrate clothing and, essentially, allow security personnel to view the naked bodies of airline passengers. (I wrote a brief post about it at my other blog.)

Now, it turns out that those tests were so successful, that “the Transportation Security Administration plans to replace the walk-through metal detectors at airport checkpoints with whole-body imaging machines — the kind that provide an image of the naked body.”

nudity illegal in north carolina

Does anyone know if that assertion is true? Some local authorities are making this claim after a physician complained about seeing nude sunbathers at Bird Island.

The second most irritating part of this story, to me, is the statement that “officials are trying to stop sunbathers from flaunting it all on Bird Island.” This phrasing implies that nudists are exhibitionists, and that their is some sort of intentional exposure, akin to flashing or streaking, going on.

I wish people would pay attention and realize that naturism is not about being seen nude, nor about seeing others nude. It is about being nude, without pride and without shame, but with simple acceptance. Why, why WHY do people insist on not understanding this fact?!

psychology of nudity

3 04 2009

Kima writes:

if you can stand naked before your companions, your mentors, jurors and strangers alike, then you are free.  If I can be completely unashamed of my physical self; mark, realize, and celebrate every inch of my body publicly and without fear of what others will see–of what I will see–then how should I be afraid of my soul?

college nudists

2 04 2009

Two items popped up in my Google Alerts today that involve college students and nudism.

In the first, some anthropology students at Bellevue College in Washington meet resistance when they try to form a nudist group on their campus. I can’t find any other references to this on the web right now, so I’m not sure if it’s an April Fools thing, or if it just hasn’t been covered by any other news media.

In Texas, a student checks out a nudist event held by The Hill Country Nudists, and has a very positive experience. Near the end, she talks about sharing a hot tub with two middle-aged men.

They’re asking me about my career goals and I am responding openly. I definitely feel naked, but I don’t feel exposed or sexually objectified.

pbs censors nudity from king lear

Blogger ephemerist has a fun post about the PBS broadcast of the recent stage production of King Lear, wherein Ian McKellan appears (briefly) nude. PBS snipped the nude scene before airing the program.

I didn’t make it to the play when it came to Minneapolis last year, but some friends did, and said McKellan’s performance was phenomenal.

“i am NOT a naturist”

30 03 2009

A businesswoman takes offense at being inaccurately labeled as a naturist:

Yes, reposting.
Second time around might work. I don’t care if I get told off – it’s survival. I just found out that I’m on page 2 now damn it.

Not that I have a problem with being a naturist – don’t get me wrong – but I am not one.
And I don’t care what people think of me, as long as they judge me on who I am and not on what I appear to be.

Someone googled my name yesterday though, and I come up on a naturist website. On page 4 damn it. He legged it of course.

British Naturism is a client of mine and I was nicely asked to be on a directory – how could I refuse? (by saying no, I guess)

So I am basically posting a blog which hopefully, will come up on the search before the incriminating one.

‘better go and put some clothes on now then.

She claims to have no issue with naturists, and on the one hand, how can you not believe it? She does business with a naturist organization, after all. But the use of the word “incriminating” and her overall tone paint a different picture. I do understand that she doesn’t want to be wrongly represented, but she implies that there’s something bad about being a naturist. *sigh*
